How much does it cost to travel around the world by bicycle?

I am often asked how much it costs to travel by bicycle around the world. My answer is that it costs as little or as much as you want! This is because there is no answer to the question because everyone is cycling differently. Some people may want to stay in hotels most of the time. Others persistently refuse to pay for accommodation, and the wild camp is 100 percent of the time. Personally, on average, I can pedal 10 pounds a day fairly comfortably. (That's $ 15 a day if using US dollars is easier for you!)-- Follow Us.

Bike Touring Reality Check

Now, you often read about how someone cycled around the world at $ 3 a day, or how someone spent just £ 8,000 traveling for four years. Let's do a reality check. These people are either sparing with the truth, have a diet that frightens nutritionists, or they have done a lot of freeloading. My personal experience is that 10 pounds per day are about right. This allows the more expensive countries to be averaged out with the cheaper ones. It's a realistic number that occasionally allows for a few treats or for emergencies like buying a new rear-wheel or derailleur.

Even $ 15 a day is too cheap, right?

Most people who have never taken a long-distance cycle tour will think that $ 10 or $ 15 per day is still incredibly cheap. Duh ... that's why I make it people !! I can travel less in three months than some people on a two-week holiday abroad! That's one of the reasons why cycling is so appealing to me all over the world. How exactly can I handle 10 pounds a day?

Here is how

First, this figure assumes that I have already bought the bike and the entire kit I need. Sure, bits need to be replaced from time to time, especially garments. However, this is usually possible with a daily budget of £ 10. With the kit already purchased, only the daily living costs, accommodation, food and threats remain.

The cost to cycle the world

accommodation

The vast majority of cyclists traveling around the world will be carrying a tent. By choosing a wild camp or a campsite, the cost of accommodation will be significantly reduced. Even if you camp wildly five days a week, it's possible to stay in cheap digs two days a week. This gives you time to sort out your gear, wash your clothes, update your blogs, and all the other things you need to do.

In some countries, such as South America and Asia, accommodation costs only $ 5 per night. In this case, it often makes sense not to use the tent at all. Why not enjoy some affordable amenities, if not at the Ritz!

Eat

In a sense, food is more important to a long-distance cyclist than accommodation. Because if the body is not properly refueled, the wheels do not turn! Most cyclists carry cooking utensils like a camping stove. They will also have food supplies for a few days so they can camp wild at will. Preparing food itself is a huge saving. Staple foods such as pasta, rice, and oats cost very little, even in the most expensive countries. Throw in a few vegetables and vegetables as well as canned fish or meat in the season and enjoy a fairly balanced diet for very little money.

Eat cheaper?

However, in some countries (especially Thailand) it is almost impossible to cook for themselves cheaper than buying street food. Although it is cheaper to cook for yourself, the cost of a fully prepared meal with a variety of ingredients in these countries is better value for money. Again, it's not about living like a miser, but about making the most of the money you have.

Treats

This is the part where most people fall. The most important pleasure that people get into is alcohol. A beer at the end of a busy day of cycling seems a nice treat. If you have more than one pair, and the budget starts to go to pieces. (Note - I stopped drinking in October 2015).
